Pacers talk with Celtics about Rondo deal

Posted by shawn cassidy on November 30, 2011 at 3:10 AM

YAHOO:

As Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge aggressively pursues possible deals for Rajon Rondo, the Indiana Pacers have emerged as an intriguing suitor for the point guard, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

For the past few days, Pacers officials – and third-party surrogates – have been making calls and gathering information and insight into Rondo’s reputation as a teammate and leader, sources said.

The Pacers and Celtics have discussed the preliminary framework of a deal, but two sources said Indiana would need a third team to provide Boston with the talent it wants to do a deal. The Celtics are likely trying to gather the necessary pieces to make a bid for Ainge’s ultimate target: New Orleans point guard Chris Paul(notes), sources said.

It was unclear if the Pacers had begun to reach out to broaden discussions, but there was an expectation they would do so.

The Celtics have been gauging Rondo’s trade value for more than a year, and have held discussions with teams about him across the past few trade deadlines and NBA drafts. There have long been divides within Boston’s front office, coaching staff and locker room about Rondo. He can be moody, difficult and stubborn, and several league sources were dubious if the Pacers’ young coach, Frank Vogel, would have the stature to deal with Rondo.

This Rondo trade stuff isn't like before. I feel a lot different about it this time. It feels like it actually might happen one way ,or the other. I'm not for it,and to be real. I will be torn. Only a title would cure losing Rondo. I will have more detail on my feelings on a later post.

Just move Rondo, Danny. Pull the trigger. You've now totally poisoned the team's relationship with him. According to Celtics Blog, the team is now trying to do damage control with Rondo. Really? That horse is so far out of the barn and into the next state now. There's no way they ever repair their relationship with Rondo. I'd like to believe that it's Danny's way of sending a message to Rondo that he needs to get serious about his shooting, but at this point, I don't believe that Danny is smart enough for that level of thinking. Rondo has a uniquely cerebral and emotional approach to basketball. Danny has now stuck a spanner right in the middle of that.

Although few things in life have just one explanation, we always want to pinpoint one explanation as somehow the most important one. If I were to try to explain all this Rondo trade madness with just one explanation, it would be SCAPEGOATING. What all this really comes down to is that Danny doesn't want to admit that he wrecked last year, with The Trade, one of the most astonishing awful moves in NBA history. Now he's backed himself into a corner where he pretty much HAS to trade Rondo, and chances are, he's going to bet a passle of middling players back. This could actually work out, as Delonte could fill in well for Rondo, and it's perfectly obvious now that the Big Three want to get rid of Rondo. In my opinion, Rondo is a rare talent, and this situation smells like desperation.

Basically, Rondo is gone. It's that simple. There's no possible way to get this horse back in the barn. Folks need to understand that not only does this situation and hoopla poison Rondo's relationship with the management and Doc; it also poisons his relationship with the Big Three. There's no way Danny is doing all this without their approval, if not instigation. The fact that Garnett and Allen didn't even show up for Rondo's charity game, and that Pierce showed up disrespectfully late says it all. The Big Three want rid of Rondo. Now Danny is in a position where he either has to get rid of Rondo, or break up the Big Three. There is no way the magic of the Big Four can be recovered.

I do NOT think Danny will get Paul. I think Paul won't agree to that. I think he sees what those of us who are looking at this critically see, in my view: the Celtics management and the Big Three themselves want to scapegoat Rondo for what Time is doing to them. Garnett won't attack the paint now. Allen has to get the ball with perfect timing on the spot. Even Pierce can't make his own offense like he used to be able to do. None of the Big Three like to get out on the break. The Cs have no interior offense. None of this is Rondo's fault. Chris Paul's superior scoring skills MIGHT eke out another season for the Big Three, but he doesn't have the power to turn back the clock, and it MIGHT create more problems than it solves. It gives you one more guy who wants the ball, one more huge ego, and it DOESN'T give you an interior offense or a fast break game.

My guess, based on what I've seen so far, is that Rondo will be traded to the Pacers. Rondo would be very happy to be back near KY. Bird is a guy who can see the player Rondo can be, and if anyone can reach Rondo about his shooting, it's Bird. In return, Danny will get a passle of players, but no Chris Paul. He may have started down this road wanting a top pg, but it's too late to retrace his steps now.

Remember, all this became inevitable with The Trade. Danny blew up a team that seemed to be on its way to a championship. He's still trying to do damage control. He should have committed to Rondo a long time ago, making him untouchable. Had he done that, he would have known better than to make The Trade. But that's water under the bridge now. Rondo is gone.

My concern is that Danny doesn't have a clear picture. He seems to always think big trade now. Danny has mad a lot of bad moves. He's also done amazing deals. I think Danny wants his scoring. Is that a good enough reason.

He's like a gambler, who made a bad bet, and who keeps making bad bets trying to cover the ones before.

And he ignores the collateral damage. How is this rift going to be healed now? He pretty much has to trade Rondo now. His whole fundamental philosophy that anyone and everyone is tradable is wrong to begin with.

Rondo knows how to run that team- if you're serious about a championship, you can't start over this year. Also, after this long break, Rondo is probably as healthy as he has ever been and he's probably been working on his shooting like mad. He sees the writing on the wall. Go get a star center and another 2-guard shooter to complete. And as I said in another post, love P, but give Green a chance and let him start.

You can't start Green over Pierce. That's unthinkable. Pierce is ten times the player Green is. But the team can give Green more playing time. Let Green step into the traditional sixth man role.

I think Green over Ray is more realistic. Paul can go back to two guard? Like he was in the early days, but then again he was younger.

I was thinking more that Delonte could start over Ray at this point. He's a bit smaller, but he's a tough defender on taller players, and he shoots very well, and Ray Ray seems to be the starter most amenable to a bench role.

In the beginning, it's not unthinkable to start Green over P. You have to find out what he can really do. Even Danny at the end of last year said it could be a possibly that P or Ray could come off the bench. I do believe Ray needs to- love Ray! but we need more speed and better defense at the 2.

My God, think about what you are saying. There's no call for finding out 'what Green can do' if that means benching one of the best small forwards in the league. Now you COULD make an argument for giving Green a sizable chunk of Pierce's playing time, OFF THE BENCH!!
