KG Versus Series: KG takes on Tommy Heinsohn

Posted by shawn cassidy on August 14, 2012 at 11:30 AM

In today's NBA Tommy would be a small forward, but in the 1960's Tommy was a power forward.  Tommy was known for his hard-nosed style of play, yet possessing an outstanding shooting touch. Sounds like KG alright.  Tommy had the heart, and passion for the game that so little have. But KG has that same love, and passion that Tommy showed on a nightly basis.

Tom Heinsohn was a vital member of the Boston Celtics' dynasty in the 1950s and 1960s. Chosen as NBA Rookie of the Year in 1957, he helped the Celtics win eight NBA titles during his nine-year tenure, was named to the All-NBA Second Team for four years, and was an All-Star for six. Tommy has been an iconic figure for close to 60 years in Celtics nation. The 77 year old Heinsohn loves this franchise, and he loves what being a Celtic is all about. No other franchise has so many stories that span over six decades.

If you want to compare KG to Heinsohn. Both players love to play with  a fearless attitudes. Of course KG's the better player, but Tommy has the same spirit. Tommy played 9 seasons, and averaged 18.6 points, and 8.6 boards a game. Of course Tommy could have grabbed more boards, but when your teammate(Russell) averages over 20 boards a game. That limits your chances. Heinsohn's coaching ideas. In what he called "guerrilla warfare," his teams kept the pressure on opponents at all times, controlling the tempo of the game and playing with great intensity. KG,and Tommy have the same philosophy.

KG is a throwback to Tommy, and Russell. It's why we continue to love what KG gives night in,and night out.

Anthony Mason too, whom Cowens coached - remember 'hardball"? He was 8'7" in the nineties, Heinsohn's size.
