The Good
Bass has struggled throughout the preseason, or maybe the Celtics haven't set him up in the offense. Either way Bass has been less than stellar so far in the preseason. Monday night against the 76ers Bass finally got something going. Brandon played 22 minutes, and he recorded 11 points off of 5-of-9 shooting. He also grabbed 6 rebounds. Overall it was a good sign seeing Bass play to last years level of play. Bass will be just fine..
Pierce has been lacking intensity so far in the preseason. But Monday he was scoring like the truth. He played just 21 minutes, but he put up 16 points. Paul has yet to show me what role he'll take this season with Rondo as the focal point. The Celtics haven't shown us really anything on the offensive end.
The Bad
The Celtics lost the glass 48-42 against the 76ers. I was surprised that the C's lost the offensive rebounding total by just one(10-9). Honestly the Celtics haven't been real bad at rebounding the basketball this preseason. But I want more from them. Plus KG sat out Monday, but even if he played he would have played no more than 20 minutes.
The Celtics turned the ball over 20 times. This preseason has been full of bad execution by the second, and third string. You can blame that on lack of point guard depth. The Celtics seem to have issues every season with a back up big or point guard, or wing at times. This season the Celtics have depth at every position except point guard. With this being the preseason, and with Rondo playing around 20 odd minutes a night, and the same with Pierce, and Terry. The Celtics will have high turnovers
. I hope it is just the second unit, but what do the numbers suggest from last night? Well Rondo, and Pierce had 4 apiece, and that makes up almost half. The Celtics starting unit had 13 of Boston's 20 turnovers last night. So, maybe the issue isn't' just the bench.
The Ugly
The Celtics defense has been like nothing we've seen before. It's low quality stuff. It's like Radiohead becoming N'sync or something. Bottom line the Celtics are not the defensive powerhouse that they should be. Rondo had zero steals last night. Not acceptable, even if it's the preseason. Rondo's the best player on the team, and perhaps the best defensive player as well. So he should have at least a steal, or something. The Celtics allowed nearly 50% from the field last night, and they gave up 107 points. Also the Celtics allowed 52 points in the paint. That can't happen, and that was without Bynum. The Celtics are playing down because it's the preseason I hope.
Because at this rate, the Celtics will be the 7th seed in the playoffs. But honestly when the ball goes up in Miami I am confident.
