It was clear months ago the draft was weak. If you had high hopes of a trade you almost got what you were looking for. Their was a trade, but it was all draft related. The Celtics took Marshon Brooks at 25,but in a matter of minutes the Celtics traded the pick to the Nets for the 27th pick, and a future 2nd round pick in 2014. The Celtics picked up JaJuan Johnson out of Purdue. I hate Purdue because I'm a Ohio State fan,but once you become a Celtic I don't care what school you went to.
The hope of a minor trade came and went. The Celtics would take a big in the draft. Here is what Doc said about Johnson.
"We like it a lot," said Celtics head coach Doc Rivers. "We didn't think he'd be there, and he was.".
"He's a terrific shooter for his size and extremely athletic," Rivers said. "He rebounded well in college, which you hope translates over."
The Celtics will need a guy to rebound next season. The Celtics have no bigs out side of KG, and Jermaine next season. I don't know what to expect with Johnson, but here's a stat line from Johnson.
He averaged 20.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game for the Boilermakers last season, and was a First Team All-American.
I think it's easier for bigs to play right away in today's NBA. The center of today isn't going to play David Robinosn, and turn around and play Hakeem the next night. The league is built on guard play, and power forwards. If it's truly easy. The Celtics could use Johnson right away.
E'Twaun Moore who was drafted by the Celtics with the No. 55 pick.
"It helps," Rivers said. "It tells you that he (Johnson) can play with a team and fit in, and be a winner on that team and still play well. That's always important."
Moore is a solid all-around player who knows how to score. Moore would probably be a point guard in the NBA, as he is too small to be a shooting guard. He needs to work on his ballhanding and passing skills but has shown improvement in those areas of the game. He is also a very good defender and a very strong defensive rebounder for a guy his size. I wasn't a fan of this pick because of Bradley, but who knows maybe they both work well together.
The Celtics played the big card in case of the lockout, and who knows maybe Johnson truly works out for the C's. Doc had luck with Powe and Baby both were late picks in the draft.
The Celtics might not get the free agent help they want. The Celtics reacted nicely. The Celtics still have their 2.4 million exception, and they have one week until the potential lock out.
Danny made it clear that this draft was unique. He said it wasn't worth trading up in this draft. He actually traded down, and he gained a future 2nd round pick for fun.
